Are you tired of feeling like crap and not knowing why?
Worse yet, do your doctors insist that you are fine and it’s all in your head?
Do you feel like nobody in the healthcare industry cares or understands?
So did I.
I always felt that I was a healthy person. I was dubbed the team “health freak” in college due to my vegetarian diet, and my passion for rowing kept me in good physical shape. However, despite my otherwise good health I started experiencing chronic low back pain my sophomore year of college. Over the course of five years I tried everything I could think of. Different forms of chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, yoga, and physical therapy didn’t touch my pain. My x-rays were clean- perfect even- and doctors implied that it wasn’t really that bad or it was all in my head.
Luckily, even early in my schooling I was always my first clinical guinea pig. As I started learning about functional medicine I played with different detoxes, supplements and diets. This led me to do my first elimination diet and eventually a food sensitivity test, which altered me to several underlying food sensitivities. It was then that I learned that the cause of my pain wasn’t my back at all! When I cut out the foods I was sensitive to (namely, gluten) my pain went away completely. It is this experience that initially fueled my passion for functional medicine.
I fell in love with the field of functional medicine in chiropractic school and have never looked back since. What started as an interest to help my mom with her thyroid quickly turned into a journey of self-discovery and healing.
When I’m not in the office you will likely find me blogging, attending seminars, playing with Facebook, cooking, crafting, or hanging out with my dogs, Bonnie and Clyde and my husband, Mike. Mike and I are also blessed to have welcomed our daughter, Jessica into the world in September 2015. I also love to try out new gluten and dairy-free recipes and attending paleo and vegan potlucks.
