The drop in vitamin D levels during the winter months is certainly a feasible explanation for the seasonality of influenza and other upper respiratory viral infections. Vitamin D is critical to immune system health. I am also not a proponent of the flu vaccine, as the benefits do not outweigh the risks. I recently read a study that showed 71 people need to be vaccinated to prevent one case of the flu: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0010949/. Not exactly promising odds!

Yeah, I'm not at all impressed by the research I have read on the flu vaccine. I wrote a big article on it two years ago which was the subject of much controversy- not sure why, it was the research that was crap, not my article about it! You can find that article here:

And to think that a couple of years ago I was denied health insurance for low vitamin D. I would bet that 90% of us Northwestern folk have a vitamin D deficiency!

Wow, I've never heard of somebody being denied insurance for low vitamin D, Ute! I think you are correct- when I practiced in Phoenix every single person I saw was deficient (except the few who were already supplementing with 10,000 IU a day).... And that was in Phoenix, AZ! I can only imagine how much worse it is in North Carolina where I am now!
