It irks me to no end that many MDs are so quick to slap patients on a pharmaceutical for autoimmune diseases but nutrition and it's role in the management of these diseases is rarely, if ever, addressed. I didn't know however that autoimmune diseases are so much more prolific among women. That is a fascinating statistic you mentioned.

Yes, there is definitly a genetic component to AI diseases, Barb, but they vary from disease to disease. For example, about 95% of folks with celiac disease have the HLA-DQ2 geneotype, while the other remaining 5% generally have the DQ8 geneotype. However, about 30% of the population is HLA-DQ2 and only about 1% of the population has CD, so there is clearly something at play that "turns on" that gene in celiacs.

I appreciate your view that all autoimmune diseases are immune system diseases. Conventional medicine really has it wrong with their treatment silos, especially considering that people who are diagnosed with one autoimmune disease are at much higher risk for developing another autoimmune disease. Treat the root causes and address it as an IMMUNE SYSTEM disease and the risk for developing another autoimmune disease will be lowered.
